What Do You Mean By “Custom Design”?

Anyone who has ever visited our website, (www.mikeslaseretching.com), will have seen that we frequently mention that we offer “Custom Designs” and “Custom Monuments”. So, what do we mean by this? The best way to explain this is by showing you some examples of custom designs and monuments we have created for our clients.

Custom Design

With the purchase of most of our monuments*, a custom design on the front of the monument is included. With a flush or bevel marker, there is only one side visible once the marker is installed in the cemetery, thus a custom design can be placed on this side of the marker. In the case of an upright or slant monument, a custom design can also be added to the back of the monument for an additional charge**.

Most often, a custom design will be laser etched, as the detail that is included can only be visible if the design is laser etched. While we have created custom sandblasted designs, it is important to keep in mind that a sandblasted design must be simple line art. Therefore, we are much more limited when it comes to a sandblasted design. Whether or not we are able to place a custom laser etched deign on a monument depends completely upon the color of the granite. In order to obtain the highest quality completed design, we recommend only our Jet Black granite, as it is the darkest black and allows even extremely small details to remain visible. Although it is possible to laser etch designs on our Midnight Black granite, we only recommend designs which are not extremely detailed and we rarely ever advise that a portrait be etched on the Midnight Black. For additional information on determining what types of design can be added to which colors of granite, visit our blog:

One of the custom designs which is most popular with our clients is one which covers the full monument. We frequently receive requests to create a scene using several images that the client has or has found on our website. An example of a design that I just created for a client is below:

Image

This scene was created using the below images:

As you can see, we made several changes in order to create the final look the client was interested in. The background scene is a picture we found of a back road in Ohio, which is where our client is from and where Mr. Stanley often road his motorcycle on roads such as these. However, in order to use this image, I had to remove the person in the image riding a scooter. After doing so, we placed the image of Mr. Stanley in the background, adjusting the size and flipping it the opposite direction in order to ensure that it looked natural. We also added a slight shadow beneath the motorcycle, which also ensures the natural look of the image.

Keep in mind that the above design is the most extreme case of customization. We are also able to create custom designs using our own images and/or epitaphs and poems. Below is a perfect example of a customized monument:

These are just two examples of custom designs that we have created for our clients. Each of the representatives at Mike’s Laser Etching/ Sartin Memorials are certified Graphic Artists. With the technology now available to us, we can create just about anything our clients are looking for. There is no better way to honor your loved one than to create a unique and personalized monument to be placed at their resting place.

Custom Monument

In addition to the custom designs we are able to create for monuments, we are also able to create a completely custom monument. We are able to do this, while still charging a reasonable price, because we work directly with the quarries and granite manufacturers. It is because of this direct relationship with them that we are able to work with our clients to create a sketch of the design they are looking for, and forward it to the granite manufacturer with the exact dimensions. The monument is then created and shipped out to us. Once it arrives at our shop, we then add the names, pictures and any designs that the client has requested.

Below is an example of a custom monument we ordered for a client:

This is the concept created by our Graphic Artists, using the information the client had provided about what she was looking for. Once the client had approved the concept, it was forwarded to the manufacturer, along with the dimensions, to be created.

Typically, when you think of purchasing a monument for your loved one, I’m sure you would picture making an appointment and driving to a local sales lot. Traditionally, this is how most monument dealers present their products to a client. While Mike’s Laser Etching/Sartin Memorials does still offer this type of monument sales, we also offer two other sales options which have not only allowed us to work with clients from all over the United States, including as far away as Hawaii and Alaska, but have also allowed us to work with clients who prefer not to or unable to come in person to a sales lot. It is our goal here at Mike’s Laser Etching/Sartin Memorials to ensure that our clients are able to purchase and design a unique and beautiful monument for their loved one, while understanding that this is one of the most difficult purchases they have ever had to make.

IN HOME APPOINTMENT

Image

Contact 877-603-8484 (Mary B) or 877-836-0332 (Sara Jordan) or to schedule an in home appointment. We can travel a reasonable distance and have staff who live in Maryland, Pennsylvania and Delaware, all who are able to travel for an in home appointment. We have found that these types of appointments help with those who are home bound and are not comfortable working via email to create and purchase a monument. We are able to create previews, draw up contracts and take payments, all from the comfort of your own home.

ONLINE SALES

Image

Email our sales staff at info@mlestones.com or give us a call at 877-836-0332 to start your online monument purchase. Our sales staff, most of whom are also certified graphic artists, will work with you over the phone and via email to create and purchase a unique and beautiful monument. In today’s society, you can purchase just about anything online. But, most people don’t know that you can also purchase a monument for your loved one online as well. We can work via the telephone and internet with clients who are both local and non-local. We typically determine whether or not the cemetery in which the stone will be installed is within travel distance for our setting crew on the first phone call or email. If our setting crew can install the monument, we will include the cost of this installation in the price quote. If the cemetery or a local monument company needs to do the monument installation, although we do often assist with any applications or information the cemetery requires, the cost of installation would not be included in the total sales price. We have found that people from all over the country prefer to work with us for several different reasons, the most important being that we are customer satisfaction oriented, as well as offering some of the lowest prices in the United States. Purchasing a monument online is simple. If you can purchase clothing online, there is no reason you can’t purchase your monument online as well!

Call us today at 877-836-0332 to schedule your appointment to meet a member of our sales staff at one of our 5 local display lots. Our local monument displays and sales offices are located in areas which make us easily accessible to any clients who live in Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania and even New Jersey. We schedule appointments 7 days a week and can meet you anytime of the day that is best for you.

Aren’t Porcelain Portraits for Headstones?

Image

Over the past few weeks, you may have noticed that Mike’s Laser Etching/Sartin Memorials has been advertising our holiday discount on Porcelain Portraits. While we have offered our Porcelain Portraits for quite a while now, this is the first big holiday sale we have had on our Porcelains. Because of our increased focus on the Porcelain Portraits, we have began to receive may messages and phone calls from clients regarding the Porcelain Portraits and where they can be used.

Originally, Mike’s Laser Etching/Sartin Memorials began to offer our own Porcelain Portrait to our monument clients. Although we had offered them previously, most of our clients were hesitant to order a Porcelain Portrait for their monument because of the delay caused when ordering them from the provider in Europe. Rather than the one to two week turn around that we currently offer, it would take months to finally receive the Porcelain Portrait. During this delay, the monument would be completed and ready for installation or shipment, but was sitting in our shop awaiting the arrival of the Porcelain. So, while clients thought the Porcelains were beautiful, they typically would choose not to order one, thus avoiding the delay.

After the frustration of waiting several months for a shipment of Porcelain Portraits to arrive, the owner of Mike’s Laser Etching/Sartin Memorials decided to look into creating them in house. Once we were able to ensure that we could offer high quality Porcelain Portraits to our clients, we purchased all the necessary equipment and supplies and had each of our employees trained in how to make them. We offered the Porcelains to not only our current and new clients, but also to clients who had ordered monuments in the past, as they could be added to monuments which were already installed in the cemeteries.

Several months after we began creating the Porcelain Portraits, we realized that, just like the laser etched tiles we have offered for years, the porcelain would make a great keepsake to display in the home or office. Unlike the laser etched tiles, the porcelains could be created in color rather than black and white. Although the black and white laser etched tiles are beautiful, some people just prefer to have their favorite images displayed in color. The porcelains allow our clients to choose between black and white or color, as both are possible with the Porcelain Portraits. While the most popular shapes seem to be the ovals and the rectangles, the heart, square and circle porcelains are equally as beautiful.

The Porcelain Portraits can be easily displayed on a plate stand in the places that you would normally display pictures in a picture frame. One of the most beautiful displays I have seen is from a client who ordered three porcelains, using images from her wedding, which she then displayed in a three tier plate stand. An image of this display is below:

Image

Of course, rather than being hung on the wall, they can be displayed on a table or shelf. Here are a few examples of the porcelains in plate stands.

How accurate are the previews that you provide to clients? Does the finished stone actually look like the preview?

We get this question a lot. I think the best way to answer it is to provide a few examples of the preview with a photo of the finished monument.
